Today you can visit the original factory, in Yoichi, a town east of Sapporo, close to Otaru. Today’s Yoichi has a population of only around 20,000 people, so by Japanese standards this is a pretty tiny city. The other is Miyagikyo Distillery near Sendai. Taking the train from Sapporo to Yoichi is easy and fun. The gift shop includes bottles of the signature whisky, as well as limited edition bottles that are only available at the distillery. At Suntory, he worked with founder Shinjiro Torii to make Japan's first whisky at their Yamazaki distillery, in a part of Osaka just outside of Kyoto. Masataka Taketsuru, known as the father of Japanese whisky, founded the Nikka distillery in the 1930s. Yoichi is home to Nikka Whisky’s Yoichi Distillery, one of two places where the company produces single-malt whisky. The tour is free (currently must be reserved in advance due to COVID) and the tasting is great (also free). The truth is that when Masataka Taketsuru came back to Japan, fired up and ready to promote the drink in his home country, his first step was to become factory manager of Suntory. Nikka Whisky is one of the two biggest brands of domestic whisky in Japan, alongside its more internationally-known big brother Suntory. ![]()
